It’s been over a year since Contour’s rebirth, and things are looking very promising for this adventure action-cam company. This past year they released their Contour Roam3 camera. This camera captures video at 1080p/30 fps or 720p/60fps, and records it on an included 8GB memory card. Still photos can be captured in 5-megapixel single frame or burst modes. The cameras most noticeable feature is it’s ability to shoot underwater at a depth of up to 30 feet (9 meters) without any waterproof protective case. This is a big improvement over it’s predasecor Roam2 which only could go down as deep as 3 feet 1 Meter).
The battery life is “built-in”, meaning it can’t be swapped in the field for a fully-charged extra. The Contour goes from the “off position” to “record mode” in just two seconds. It’s water resistant and has a wide-angle rotating lens. There are a variety of accessory mounts that make this camera very diverse in nature.
So how does this camera perform? Watch this award-winning video from OuterEscape endorsed guide & Alaskan Charter Captain Rob Endsley of Prince of Wales Sportfishing.
Rob’s video utilizing a Contour Roam camera was winner of the 2013 Greater Anacortes Fishing Film Festival. Rob does a fantastic job documenting the performance characteristics of the Contour Roam camera and several of the mounting accessories which allow for capturing some outstanding underwater footage.
The Contour Roam3 is priced at $200, which is $50 more than the Roam2. Unlike the Roam2, the Roam3 lacks mobile connectivity, GPS video mapping, live streaming capability, and an external microphone jack. However, it does have a 270-degre rotatable lens with a 170-degree field of view and a laser alignment system for aiming the lens. It has an all-aluminum body, and a locking instant-on record switch.
Demand for this product continues to grow in many segments and outdoor verticals, action-sports including cycling. It’s great for water sports, and power sports as well.
